LASIK: Step-by-Step

1

Comprehensive Pre-Op Evaluation

Corneal topography, pachymetry (thickness mapping), wavefront aberrometry, pupil measurement, and tear film assessment. This full workup determines your candidacy and optimal procedure.

2

Femtosecond Flap Creation

A precise corneal flap (100–120 µm thick) is created with our femtosecond laser in under 20 seconds — completely blade-free. The flap is gently lifted to expose the stromal bed.

3

Excimer Laser Reshaping

A custom wavefront-guided excimer laser ablates corneal tissue with 0.25 µm precision, correcting your exact refractive error. Eye-tracking at 1,000 Hz ensures accuracy even with micro-movements.

4

Flap Repositioning & Sealing

The corneal flap is repositioned and adheres naturally within minutes — no stitches required. A protective shield is worn for the first night.

Are You a Candidate?

Age 18 years or older (21+ preferred for LASIK)
Stable prescription for at least 12 months
Healthy corneal thickness ≥ 480 µm (verified by corneal scan)
Prescription within treatable range (up to -12D myopia, +6D hyperopia, 6D astigmatism)
No active eye infections, keratoconus, or corneal scarring
Not currently pregnant or nursing
No autoimmune or connective tissue diseases
Reasonable expectations about outcomes

Before Your Laser Surgery

Stop wearing soft contact lenses 2 weeks before, rigid gas-permeable lenses 4 weeks before
Arrange a driver — you cannot drive home after surgery
Avoid all eye makeup, creams, and perfume on surgery day
Eat a light meal and stay well-hydrated before the procedure
Bring wraparound sunglasses for post-op light sensitivity
Inform us of all medications, supplements, or allergy history
Get a good night's sleep the night before your procedure

Recovery Timeline

Hours 1–6

Mild watering, light sensitivity, and a gritty feeling are normal. Vision improves dramatically within the first few hours. Rest quietly at home.

Day 1–3

Vision fluctuates slightly as the cornea heals. Use prescribed lubricating and antibiotic drops. Avoid rubbing your eyes. Most patients return to office work by Day 2.

Week 1–4

Vision stabilizes progressively. Avoid swimming, contact sports, and dusty environments. Drive once your surgeon confirms visual acuity at your Day 1 follow-up.

3–6 Months

Final vision and corneal stability typically reached by 3 months. Any minor fluctuation resolves. Rare enhancement procedures (if needed) are discussed at this stage.

State-of-the-Art Equipment

Our Technology

We use only FDA-approved, internationally certified equipment for all procedures.

Femtosecond Laser

Creates precise corneal flaps (LASIK) or lenticules (SMILE) with infrared pulses lasting one quadrillionth of a second — zero blade contact.

Wavefront-Guided Excimer

Maps over 1,200 unique points on your cornea and corrects higher-order aberrations for sharper night vision and contrast sensitivity.

Corneal Topographer

High-resolution 3D mapping of corneal curvature, detecting irregularities like keratoconus that would make laser surgery unsafe.

1,000 Hz Eye Tracker

Ultra-rapid eye tracking compensates for micro-movements during ablation, ensuring the laser hits only the intended tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between LASIK, SMILE, and PRK?
LASIK creates a corneal flap then reshapes the underlying tissue — fastest recovery. SMILE is a flapless procedure that removes a tiny lenticule from inside the cornea — ideal for dry-eye-prone patients and active lifestyles. PRK removes the corneal surface layer entirely then reshapes — best for thin corneas or contact sports athletes. All three achieve comparable long-term vision outcomes.
Am I a candidate for laser eye surgery?
Most adults 18+ with stable prescriptions and adequate corneal thickness qualify. Some patients with thin corneas, extreme prescriptions, or dry eye may be better suited for SMILE or PRK. Others may require an IOL-based solution (ICL or Lens Replacement). A free consultation will determine your best option.
Is LASIK painful?
No. Anesthetic eye drops numb the eye completely. You may feel mild pressure during the 30-second procedure. The most common sensation afterward is a gritty feeling for 6–12 hours, which resolves with lubricating drops.
How long do the results last?
LASIK, SMILE, and PRK provide permanent corneal reshaping. The correction itself does not wear off. However, age-related changes (presbyopia after 40) are natural and unrelated to your laser procedure. Most patients enjoy clear vision for decades.
What is the success rate at Iris Vision Center?
Over 98% of our laser vision correction patients achieve 20/20 vision or better. Patient satisfaction exceeds 99%. Our outcomes are tracked and reported in line with international benchmarks.
What is SMILE surgery and who is it best for?
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the newest generation of laser correction. A femtosecond laser creates a tiny lens-shaped disc inside the cornea, which is removed through a 2–3 mm incision — no flap, no excimer laser. It is ideal for high myopia, patients with dry eyes, and those in contact or high-activity professions (military, athletes), as there is no flap risk.
What about PRK — who needs it?
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is the original laser correction technique and remains the gold standard for patients with thin corneas, previous corneal surgery, or certain occupations (pilots, military) where a flap is not advised. The epithelial layer heals naturally over 3–5 days, and visual recovery is slightly longer (2–4 weeks) but the final result equals LASIK and SMILE.
Are Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) an option?
Yes. For patients outside the laser treatable range (very high myopia over -10D, thin corneas, or extreme hyperopia), Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) or Phakic IOLs are placed inside the eye without removing the natural lens. They are reversible and provide outstanding optical quality. Our surgeons will advise if this is the right solution for you.
