What is SMILE surgery and who is it best for?

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the newest generation of laser correction. A femtosecond laser creates a tiny lens-shaped disc inside the cornea, which is removed through a 2–3 mm incision — no flap, no excimer laser. It is ideal for high myopia, patients with dry eyes, and those in contact or high-activity professions (military, athletes), as there is no flap risk.

What about PRK — who needs it?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is the original laser correction technique and remains the gold standard for patients with thin corneas, previous corneal surgery, or certain occupations (pilots, military) where a flap is not advised. The epithelial layer heals naturally over 3–5 days, and visual recovery is slightly longer (2–4 weeks) but the final result equals LASIK and SMILE.

Are Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) an option?

Yes. For patients outside the laser treatable range (very high myopia over -10D, thin corneas, or extreme hyperopia), Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) or Phakic IOLs are placed inside the eye without removing the natural lens.
